Posted by Rollo~the~Ax on June 04, 19100 at 07:20:30: Tal I have just returned from a few days of travelling, so I know nothing more than what I have read here. First, Rollo's comments are right on the money. It is incredibly unfortunate that misunderstandings can lead to such situations. However, once steel is drawn, and honor is invoked, there is little that can prevent this from becoming a full-blown confrontation. Is it sensible or logical that two grown men would be willing to come to blows over a few misspoken or misunderstood words? If you answer no, then perhaps you do not understand the gorean concept of honor very well. Is there still a way to resolve this matter without bloodshed? Yes, I am certain there is, and I would be willing, like Rollo, to arbitrate this matter or assist in any way I can. If, however, the two Warriors wish to meet and resolve this with steel, then so be it. As long as each participant has the same intentions and will realize the same consequences, then it should be done as soon as possible. It takes two combatants to fight, and they must agree on a few fundamental things. Location, judges, and rules for combat are primary. Gorean Shores has a system of dueling. It requires three Council members. It has a set of criteria, and it can be to the death, or not. We cannot allow combat in GS that does not meet our rules, therefore, I must insist upon our Council members as judges. If either party does not agree to that, then that is fine, just hold the combat somewhere else, under another site's rules. If they cannot agree to a place, rules, judges, etc... then this is all a waste of time. If the fight takes place in GS, will Marius receive a "home field" advantage? Rollo and I have both written about our judging of fights, and the fact that if anything we scrutinize the criteria even closer when a "home field" combatant is involved. I certainly understand the concerns of an outsider who is challenged by a GS patron to a fight in GS. All I can do to assuage these concerns is to state that we will try our absolute best to be fair, impartial, and honorable in our dealings. Frankly, if combat takes place in GS, we the judges will be criticized no matter how we vote. But such is life, and we are willing to do our duty despite the fact that we are sure to face criticism for our decision. If combat does take place in GS, and if it is to the death, then the loser will be banned from Gorean Shores. We cannot control whether he will honor the death anywhere else on Gor, so if he wishes to live out the rest of his time in another tavern, there is nothing we can do about it. So, Marius might risk more, as he will lose a Home; while Daemonstorm could theoretically return to his even if he lost. It is my belief that if a Warrior fights in combat, he should be prepared to give up online Gor completely if he is killed in fair battle. If both sides are going to follow this tenet, fine. But it should be made clear what each party views as their "downside" if they lose. If one is willing to leave Gor completely, but one is simply willing to be banned from GS but nowhere else, then we do not have a fair fight. Such a little thing to cause such commotion, right? There are no little things when it comes to honor, to a Warrior. I wish you, Marius and Daemonstorm, both well, and hope that you can resolve this. If you cannot, I wish you both an honorable and glorious fight. Xern
