Yes, it is very true that if an honorable man fights a dishonorable man, Gor stands to lose the honorable man but retain the dishonorable one. I think what you are saying is this: the honorable man might win a few fights, but once he is defeated, he will leave Gor. The dishonorable man won't leave Gor, but either change his name or spend his time in another tavern. So, in the long run, Gor is bound to lose good Goreans, but the bad ones will stick around.

However, a few points. First, a Gorean should be cautious about entering combat in the first place. In other words, an honorable Warrior should only enter the sand pit with one who he knows is likewise honorable. If some unknown person comes in and challenges a Gorean, there is no dishonor in telling him to go to hell. I've said in previous posts that I will only meet a known Gorean in the sand pit. I won't waste my time fighting a gamer or HNG. It demeans Gor.

Second, in a fight between an honorable Gorean and a dishonorable one, I believe that the honorable Warrior stands a much greater chance of prevailing, at least in this tavern. In Gorean Shores, one of the criteria for battle is honoring the opponent. In my mind this has always meant two things: honoring the blows of the opponent (such as acknowledging a wound whenever possible) but also *giving* honor to the opponent, by demonstrating a respect for the man who stands against you in the sand. Since it is unlikely that an inherently dishonorable man will be able to meet this criteria, the fight should favor the honorable Warrior.

Third, if the dishonorable man loses and then reappears, it is not likely that he will be warmly welcomed by any site. It is the mark of a gamer to change names and persona, and I would hope that any site would disparage such an individual once it became known that this person had been killed. In other words, I am a believer that the system will weed out the dishonorable person eventually, even if he continues to return to Gor after a defeat.

Is this foolproof? No, of course not. But, combat in online Gor is actually a very rare phenomenon. It is unusual to see two good Goreans fight each other, because usually other Goreans will attempt to intercede, knowing that the loss of either Gorean hurts online Gor.

Online combat is a controversial subject, and certainly I accept the fact that many think it is either foolish or illogical. But online Gor tries to recreate the Gor of the books in any way it can. And combat is a very important part of the books. The system we've created is not perfect by any means, but until we hear of a better way of conducting combat in the Gorean context, it will have to do.
