FREE WOMAN OR SLAVE? By Marcus of Ar

Not long ago, a free woman I know made the following statement:

"Norman stated that all women were submissives, yet all were not slaves; no matter how many quotes I will
see thrown about the proof of the matter is, if it was true that all women were slaves... Norman would simply
have made them all slaves on Gor."

Actually, Norman did not state that. Not precisely.

What he actually stated was that any females can be compelled to accept a submissive role when
subjected to masterful behavior when it is enacted by a male who is strong enough, and capable enough, to
control her. And that under the correct circumstances, any female can experience a certain sense of surrender,
and inherent "rightness," in the arms of a strong male. Norman suggests that this is a direct result of
biological evolution.

The reason why Gor is not populated only by male Masters and female slaves is quite obvious: because
not all females are suited to be legally enslaved, and because a society cannot function very well if the
mothers and sisters of all the men are denied the dignity and freedom which is necessary for those females to
raise the next generation of offspring. The female may be a member of what Goreans call "the slave sex" (a
better definition might be "the sex which can be subjugated by the male") but legal slavery on a totally
comprehensive scale would eventually destroy the underpinnings of Gorean society. The society must
continue to function, and for that to happen, a separation between the idealized mother as nurturer, and the
acceptance of unchecked feminine sexuality by the slave, must be strictly enforced.

So, apparently the Goreans feel that only one out of every forty or so Gorean females are suited for slavery.
The rest are allowed to maintain privileges of rank and social status, until they indicate by their actions that
they are suited to be slaves. The slave receives, in exchange for her submission, a depth of primal emotional
sexuality undreamed of by the free female... but to do this, she must abandon her dignity, or have it stripped
from her.

The ratio of one slave for every forty free women is a Gorean ratio. On Earth, I suspect that ratio might
even be inversely proportional... perhaps here there are forty females who are not sufficiently proud and
stubborn to be anything but natural slaves at the feet of a strong and masterful man, for every one female
who is bold, gently supportive and dignified enough to earn the respect and support of a Gorean Man as a
free companion.

It is just as difficult for a sexually-starved female to resist the magnetic sexual attraction of being controlled
by a strong Gorean Man, as it is for a sexually-starved male to resist the temptation to put a natural Gorean
kajira at his feet.

Both individuals, the masterful Man and the ignited slave, are rare in our society, and this very rarity
produces some distinct side-effects. One of those side-effects is the difficulty for an Earth female to remain as
aloof and noble as Gorean freedom would require, when the sexual profundity of acceptance of submission
beckons to her.

Why is it so hard for the Earth-based Gorean man to accept that there is such a thing as a free woman?

Well, most of the women of Earth have been reduced by the limitations and restrictions of their societal
training to a state which seems naturally conducive to submission, at the hands of a strong male. As
mentioned above, they are starved for strong Men. Therefore, the female who is able to resist and
complement such a male (and I mean REALLY do it, not simply spout a bunch of buzz-words and hide behind
some moralistic rhetoric about guaranteed equality) is quite rare in our present society. So are strong and
self-assured males, for that matter.

It is perhaps difficult for the Earth male to believe in the existence of a naturally free woman when so few
exist, and so many have never encountered one.

When Earth males like myself embrace Gorean philosophy, therefore becoming, in a sense, Gorean, they
tend to see most of the females of Earth the same way that the Gorean Men in the books do. As natural
slaves.

Until one has met and encountered a true "Gorean-quality" free woman, it is difficult to envision such an
individual.

I have the distinct privilege of knowing a few such women. I have seen strong "Gorean" Men react
instinctively to them, automatically treating them deferentially and rendering them respect, this feeling of
natural adoration and protectiveness springing from a gut level.

One does not automatically start out as either slave, or free, or Gorean Man or Gorean Woman, in this
philosophy. One starts out as an Earthling with natural tendencies towards one or the other. It is just as
necessary for the Gorean free woman to prove herself worthy of the respect of Gorean Men as it is for the
slave to prove herself worthy of his ownership and attention, and for the Gorean Man to prove himself the
natural master and protector of them both.

I add that, too often, the Gorean philosophy is superficially adopted by misguided Earth males who use it
as a ready explanation for some degree of innate misogyny, that misogyny springing from an unreasonable
distrust and hatred of all that is female. The truly enlightened Gorean Man has no need to hate or fear any
female, simply because he accepts and understands the relational integration through which male and female
interact. Confident in his own masculinity he does what pleases him, and forms opinions of the females in his
presence based upon who they are and their natural relationship to him, rather than on some deep-seated fear
that they will reject him, and must therefore be rejected first. Thus, such misogyny is not a part of the male
Gorean personality.

Except, possibly, in the city of Tharna. And there are distinct historical reasons for that. : )
