: Tal, and greetings once again...... : : Fighting On-line .......... Yes, or No ?????? LOL...Once again a topic that will have as many answers as there are people to respond......... : I have stated My personal opinion, or feelings about fighting on-line before..... so rather then rehash that, I think that here I will just list what I consider to be points of both sides of the matter, and let others sift through and make their OWN decisions......... : 1. Rules of fights... each site that has fighting makes up their own battle rules.... and often these differ greatly... everything from * No holds bared * , to.. * 3 movements, no matter how small.... three posts each.....* to * 75 words,or 5 lines of script, per post, 5 posts each... * to * Race fights, where the ONLY ability that matters is how fast you can type....* From this wide range of rules, how can any reasonable person judge a fight as being fair, or just ???? If *My* site says 5 post..... and *Yours * says race fight, Who is right, and fit to win...or judge ???? : 2. Location ........ When a fight takes place, the location of it can make the decision sometimes before the first blow is struck...... This comment is not meant to insult, or inflame ANY person or site.... But let us face facts....... To say that the combatant that calls the site where the fight is taking place * home * does NOT have a * home court * advantage, is at best naive, and at worst dishonest....... The esteem that either combatant is held in is often seen as a deciding factor in ANY fight....... And in all honesty, I have seen fights where the * visitor * was never given a chance against the * home town hero *.... : 3. Weapons ...... LOL.. One of My favorite sources of entertainment....LOL.... Having seen every imaginable..( and many beyond imagination ) weapon carried and used on Gor, It should come as no surprise that the * what and how * people fight lends much to the argument of WHY fighting should be done, or allowed ....... Be it the * 7 ft sword axe, that was used with the grace of a scalpel * or the * Pair of broad swords that moved like lightning ..* LOL... wrist crossbows, multiple throwing knives used at once, etc., etc., etc., ....... almost every warrior I have ever seen fight, or talk about His ability, is a * master * of weapons.......faster, stronger, better .....than the next guy......... LOL.. Well ..... sword, spear, crossbow, axe, knife, bow, bola, blow gun, throwing knife, tomahawk, rapier, scimitar, katana ........ on, and on.... I own, RT.... and have for years... have fought with .........in re-enactment groups, and medieval clubs or groups...... and even killed with a few of them RT...... animals, and men............ So don’t go telling these ole boy that an on-line, VT, fight is in anyway close to * the real deal *.........That dog don’t hunt...............As for the ability of the men using these weapons...??? Well lets just say the Gor seems to attract the highest concentration of long time martial arts experts that I have ever seen outside a dojo.....LOL... LOL.... : 4. Judging of Fights or Spars ............ I have been a judge at spars for fun...... fights for points of honor..... and death matches......... And the only thing that I can say is consistent about any VT fight is that the decision is always questioned by the loser and His friends..... and applauded by the winner and His friends...... I will swear...here and now...... that in EVERY fight I ever judged, I didn’t let friendship cloud My judgement in favor of that friend..... if anything at worked against them........ For to keep from looking like I would favor a friend over one that perhaps I didn’t like, I would judge harder on that friend to make sure My honor or honesty could not be questioned over the matter........ And guess that ?????? No matter how fair or impartial a judge is or tries to be, His judgement will still be questioned...... If men are going to fight.....and ask others to judge them...... why is it that they will then question that judgement ????? Could it be that the amount of ego involved in those that want to fight on-line, will not let them accept the fact that perhaps the other guy WAS better ??? or more skilled ?????? LOL....LOL.... Nobody likes to lose....... But in any contest...... be it tiddly winks, or war ...... one has to win, and one has to lose...... the ONLY way to avoid that cold hard truth, is to NOT play ........ LOL... : 5. DEATH ........ It is perhaps one of the strangest of facts about on-line, or VT, that it is the ONLY place that I know were death is not the end............. LOL....LOL...... Lose a battle to the death in RT....and you are dead........ BELIEVE Me, I know...... I am well aquatinted with death..... have seen it ..... lived with it........ caused it....... in RT......... Yet I see many men that got killed in *fair * fights on-line that are still walking around...... drinking..... talking...... having sex...... LIVING ....... To what use is a * death match * if the man that gets killed doesn’t die, and is never seen again ??????? If people are inclined to have fights or spars in VT. then perhaps they should be kept to spars only... so that the loser can walk away beaten yes, but still alive..... In all honesty, why SHOULD a death in a VT fight be the same as an RT death ????? This medium of communication is just that.... only communication... When was the last time you yelled somebody to death over the phone ???? Or stabbed somebody to death with a fax ???? LOL...LOL.. VT death can NEVER be held as final as the real thing..... And perhaps that is a very good thing.... Because I have lost friends .....in RT.... that I know I will never see again..... in this life........ Yet with the loss of friends in VT..... there is always the hope and good possibility that they will return to our VT life style, and we will be able to once again have them close to us...... : Well..... There are a few ideas to think over.... or get upset over.... Take your pick......LOL... But what I have said here for the most part is only common sense or common knowledge..... Don’t be surprised to see Rollo argue for either side of the fighting on line issue..... Because I can see BOTH sides of the debate..... In some ways it is right and Gorean.... In others it is foolish, and a waste of time.......LOL..LOL.. Either way, it is something that will be with us as long as we have on-line Gor, I think......
